6 tips for boosting your legal translations

Image
Legal translation is a specialization that not only requires an in-depth knowledge of both the source and target languages, but also a grasp of legal terminology. Of course, it helps if you are able to get familiar with a specific area of the law or the legal system of the target language country you are serving. But that doesn’t mean to say you need a law degree in order to competently translate legal texts.   Here are 6 simple tips that will help ensure that the legal translation you produce is highly accurate and relevant to the specific needs of your client. Table of Contents 1. Discuss how the document will be used 2. Create a glossary 3. Don't forget the dialect 4. Get to grips with the legal system 5. Be clear about formatting 6. Keep lines of communication open   1. Discuss how the document will be used Some legal translations are required for nothing more than information purposes, while others will be referred to in a court of law. Having a clear under...

Should you be offering translation or localization services?

Image
Should you be offering translation or localization services? How many times do you see the term ‘localization’ pop up on your LinkedIn feed? Pretty often, right? As common as this relatively new term may be, there are actually heaps of linguists out there who still aren’t exactly sure what it’s all about. If that sounds like you, then hopefully this post will make things a little clearer for you. Local culture sets the tone The aim of localization is to make texts both linguistically and culturally suitable for their target audience . In simple terms, this means that the process of translation is not sufficient to fulfill the text’s purpose in the target region and that extra steps must be taken. These steps can be as simple as adapting time and date formats or can involve reworking visuals and color schemes in some cases. This is because cultural norms affect the way in which a text is received and therefore messages must be modified in order to suit certain regions . Practica...

What do bridges have in common with translations?

Image
What do bridges have in common with translations? Every human being has probably read a translation already. Be it the favourite novel which was originally written in English and then translated into the reader’s mother tongue, a translated article in a specialist magazine or simply the menu in a restaurant down the street. Ideally, the reader does not even notice that the text is a translation. But how can you achieve that? In German, there is the same verb for (to) ferry (= to cross a river by a ferry or convey from one place to another) and (to) translate (= to convey a message from one language to another). It is the same word in German ( übersetzen ) and obviously it also has a common origin: the conception of transferring something. "Words travel worlds. Translators do the driving." This wonderful and well-known quote by translator Anna Rusconi uses a similar conception and perfectly describes what translation is all about. People mostly use words to communicate ...
